The Academic Plague ....
Ok ... So here is the deal. I have had a recent brush with plagiarism. NO I DID NOT CHEAT! Actually, quite the opposite. Someone from one of my other classes thought so highly of my work that they decided they should submit it as their own. This is really un-cool ... As we are all aware of. However, it did manage to bring to light some issues surrounding plagiarism that I had, up to this point, remained ignorant towards.
DID YOU KNOW..........?
1) That what you submit to the University in terms of course work does not belong to YOU but to the Class and thus, the University.
2) That the work that you submit for the purpose of class grading is submitted to a data base used by the University to pull up similar words and phrasing in your papers and all others for the purpose of catching suspected plagiarists.
3) That this violates copyright infringement laws and your constitutional rights.
4) That nobody asked for permission to use your work for this purpose.
I suspose that what you don't know cant hurt you .... Well that seems to be the position that the academic sphere has taken on the issue. As angry as I am about someone else using my ideas and words for their own purposes, I am just as angry at the University for doing the same thing!

Can't say I'm surprised, but certainly disappointed.
